NG Secret Santa News!

Posted by sereneFalconer - November 13th, 2024

Hello Everyone! It’s sereneFalconer here with an announcement for all of you!

SURPRISE! I’m back from my break, and I’ll be hosting Secret Santa this year alongside @Psychogoldfish (who will be helping us make sure everything is running smoothly).

Today I’m going to give you all some details so everyone can be ready for registration, including when registration starts, when Secret Santas will be assigned, a brief overview of important rules, where you can ask questions, and who you can approach with any concerns. This is basically your 8 day warning, registration is coming up! Get excited!

Registration for Secret Santa will be open from November 21st to November 30th. During registration you will submit a character reference along with any details you would like your Secret Santa to know about.

I will make a new post with a link to the registration page. Feel free to give me a follow to get notified when it happens!

You will find out who you are drawing for on December 1st. This is when you can start working on your gifts.

All submissions for Secret Santa need to be submitted by December 24th at 11:59 pm (Eastern Standard Time) so everyone can receive their artwork on Christmas day.

Anyone who fails to submit on time will most likely be added to the naughty list, and excluded from future events.

We will have backup artists on standby to make sure everyone eventually gets a gift.

Now that there’s a general timeline, let’s talk about some things to keep in mind while you prepare for registration.

You MUST be scouted in the Art Portal in order to participate in this Secret Santa event. This requirement was introduced last year, and this year is no exception!

@LegolaSS will be hosting a separate Secret Santa event for un-scouted users. Give them a follow to be notified when that starts! (We’ll also be linking it on the registration page.)

You will need to submit an ORIGINAL character for your Secret Santa to draw. While your character can be derivative of other popular characters, it should have a lot of originality to it. You can not submit things like “Sonic the hedgehog, but he’s green”, or “A pokemon, but I added big teeth”.

Your character has to be in the art portal. You can add as much information, reference sheets, etc, as you like, you will need to link to an example of your character that’s been submitted to the Art Portal, to prove they are your character. If you have a character that’s never been posted to the portal, now’s a good time to do so.

Characters MUST be family friendly. It’s important to remember that another person is going to be drawing your character, and you don’t know who that person will be. NSFW Artwork or characters are not allowed in this event. We are also drawing a hard line at anything that even borders on being fetish art. This includes, but is not limited to, overly sexualized characters, and anything that is clearly associated with a kink.

Characters should mainly be human in appearance. We don’t want to see complex mechs, weird creatures with 100 appendages, or anything that might be difficult for character artists to render. We also don’t want any animals, basic objects, or anything else that’s not truly a character. People signing up for this event want to draw fun characters.

Anthro characters are allowed, but not full-on furries. Again, we have to consider what people will be comfortable with drawing. If you have a cute cartoon bunny girl that you could easily see in a children’s cartoon, we would allow that. If you have a yiffing fox boy with weird wet spots and drool, we are not accepting it.

Your character profile should relay the level of effort you plan on putting into your gift. We’ll be using these profiles to group artists into groups of similar skill levels. If you are an A-class artist, but only plan on spending a day making your gift, make sure the character sheet you put up isn’t your absolute top quality work, so we can get you into the appropriate group.

The full list of rules for the event will be available when registration begins on November 21st, please make sure to read them IN FULL when they become available so you don’t miss anything.

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to reply to this post!

You can also join the Secret Santa Discord server and get help there.

EDIT- Secret Santa Discussion Thread is now LIVE! Go there to post some of your recent artwork if you need some help getting scouted!

Here’s the official listing of all the rules!!

We have an awesome team of helpers to make sure this goes smoothly-

There’s me, @sereneFalconer - You can call me the “head elf” this year. I’ll be organizing the event, recruiting helpers, and providing all the news and information you need.

@Psychogoldfish - Josh is running things on the back end and making sure everything functions with the system as well as providing general guidance to the team!

@LegolaSS - Legola is one of our wonderful helpers, who will also be running a separate Secret Santa event for anyone who isn’t scouted. Follow him for more details if this interests you!

@Oddlem - She’ll be helping with all the sorting and answering questions, as well as making this year’s promotional banner!

@Wizardofrank, @Raviolibox, @queen-evvvvve, @loopykins, @skoops - The rest of our helper team! They will be helping us sort artists, answer questions, and manage the event when the time comes.

I couldn’t ask for a better batch of helper elves! They’re all freaking awesome so please give them some love when you’re able!

Finally, we have a few backup artists on standby in the event someone doesn’t get a gift. If you are interested in being a backup artist, let me know. We’ll be recruiting backup artists when we have a clearer picture of how many gifts need to be completed. Be aware that you may not be selected if we don’t need extra help.

So with that said, y’all better start thinking about what characters you want to submit, and we’ll see you next week for registration!

I have a wee small question!

I was recently de-scouted :( I have previously participated the last two years when I was still a scouted artist, is there any chance I can still participate this year?

There's a Channel in the discord called FAQ and it covers what may have caused that and the process of being re-scouted/have the block removed! I'm about to make the discussion thread for this year that the FAQ mentions. If you can't get re-scouted before registration ends, there will be an E group (hosted by @LegolaSS ) that does not require you to be scouted to participate, and I believe he will be posting more info on that soon! I'll be updating this post with that link when it becomes available :)

@stupidvampire I have the same problem as you, I was de-scouted but I was in the last Secret Santa!!

(I just replied to vampire with the same thing, but wanted to make sure you saw too!) Ahh that special time of year again I've also been brushing up on my artistic skill so whoever I'm paired with this year it's going to like what I make see you guys on the 21st

really hyped for this!

Yay! Love the annual secret santa!

Had a lot of fun taking part last year, I'm looking forward to this year's event :)

Aww yeah, it's secret santa season, baby! Question, am I allowed to include a piece that features an older design of the character to prove I own them? If so, does it need to be a design similar to the current one or can it be any older design?

I would say yeah! I think it would just be smart to clarify in your profile description that the linked post is an outdated design, and if you do have a preference toward focusing on the newer design to emphasize that as well :)

@sereneFalconer okidoki! i do have some art of the character i wanna submit that has a few minor differences from the current design [mainly colors and a few small details], so it should be fine! :3

Can't wait for this to start.

Can't wait! Oh, my references are horrendously outdated.. let's fix that.

I think I'll participate this year, it's about time.

This looks like fun.
Maybe I'll give it a shot.

Great to see NG secret santa is returning, and in good hands! Best of luck, Serene!

Aw yeah! First participated last year and it was so much fun. Looking forward to joining this one too! : D

The character restrictions seem overly limiting and arbitrary this year. No animals, no mechs, no "weird creatures", no "basic objects" (wha?) This feels judgy and limiting on creativity. And then "anthro" allowed but not "furry"? I get you're trying to say the character should not be sexualized but there are plenty of sfw furry characters around and your wording makes it sound like you don't want any furries to participate. Like I'd have to say "my character is anthro and not a furry" if I want to join, which is dumb.

I think you could generally sum up the things you're concerned with, by just saying the character should be a truly original character, family friendly, not sexualized or fetish related, mostly humanoid or anthropomorphic, and not overly complicated in design. That would be a bit more objective way to word it.

I completely understand your concerns. The main reason it is worded this way is because we’ve had issues previously with people trying to dance the line or find loopholes. Obviously not all furry characters are sexualized, however if you’re worried about something with a furry/anthro character being misconstrued as sexual, then it may be a good idea to choose a different character just to be safe. I’ll talk to the team about possibly rephrasing this rule so there’s less misunderstanding.

As for your other concerns, the reason for the rules with things like Mechs, “weird creatures”, realistic animals, and “basic objects”, those are in place for the sake of keeping the event fun for *everyone*. We want to make sure that no matter who gets whose character, they have fun drawing it! Some people may be ok with drawing a character with very complex properties, extremely nonhuman/animal anatomy, and/or a LOT of detail, and thats awesome! But not everyone would be ok with that without any stress. And on the other end, characters that are just objects may be very easy to draw but there isn’t a lot of fun or satisfaction in that for some people. Since this event randomly generates assignments based on grouping, we can’t guarantee that someone with a mech character (for example) gets someone who would be ok drawing a mech character without any stress. This is why it’s suggested to think of what a GENERAL AUDIENCE would be comfortable drawing, and worded with examples of what we mean by this.

If there’s anyone out there who really wants to draw mechs, or nsfw characters, etc, it never hurts to host your own Secret Santa specific to those things! (I think there may be another secret santa specifically for NSFW already, but I don’t know for sure. If anyone is interested in that, I’d keep your eyes peeled!)

If you have any other concerns, feel free to shoot me a dm! I’d be happy to talk about them and see what we can work out :)

Damn man, I've been looking forward to this for several months now, hype!

Would the character in my profile picture and most recent artwork be considered too much of a furry?

I don’t think so, no! The main thing we’re worried about is whether a character is sexualized or has *too* many non-human features that may be stressful to draw for a general audience. When the full set of rules releases we’re going to try and clarify this wording so theres less confusion. Your character seems to be fine tho! (And I love it, so cute :,) ) Feel free to reach out if you have any other questions!

I lost my scouting priviliges last month or earlier this month(for reasons that i'm not 100% sure)... so i was dreading the day would come for the Secret Santa announcement. Though, i've been through this EXACT same situation the previous year so, i'm hopeful this will be sorted out before the deadline.
If not, there's always the non-scout option, which i'm thankful there's a Plan B for these things.
Let's just hope things go smoothly.

Let me in!!!

Super exciting stuff!!! I love Secret Santa
